This PS2 was purchased with the intention of using the power supply as a donor for my personal PS2. I bought it for parts/not working, but I was surprised to find that it actually worked (or at least it did, until I removed the power supply. The only real issue with it was that it was quite dirty, so I tore it down to clean it.
Instead of just buying another donor console or power supply, I had a different idea I wanted to try. I had been reading about how people like to do USB-C mods on older consoles to make them run cooler and be more convenient. I went ahead and ordered a USB-C power supply off of AliExpress to give this a try. It was super easy to install (basically just plug & play). But a problem that I quickly ran into was that the I couldn’t get the console to turn on. It appeared that the power bricks I had didn’t supply enough power for startup. I didn’t realize it, but I needed a special type of power brick to account for the spikes in power consumption during startup. I needed to buy a GaN power brick because it is able to handle rapid voltage and current changes. After a trip to Best Buy, I was able to test it out and was happy to find that the console worked as it should.
